On display are the works of Karl Leonhardtsberger, especially the encounters with the face of Christ, his main theme in recent years, inspired by the Holy Shroud of Turin.

Profile

Born 1945 in Kirchdorf, Tyrol, working and living in Yokosuka, Japan.

I am a German sculptor and graduate of the Vienna school of sculpture of Wotruba, Avramidis and Pillhofer. in the spiritual lineage of:

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917)

Ossip Zadkine (1888-1967)

Josef Pillhofer (1921-2010)

Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975)

Joannis Avramidis (1922-2016)

Studied and worked for seven years with Avramidis and Pillhofer, who were my teachers, friends and mentors.

Diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

Received 1966 the prestigious Fueger-prize from the Academy.

Two years assistent professor under Joannis Avramidis at this University.

One year professor for painting at the Art School in Graz, with Josef Pillhofer.

Received 2013 the Art Mirai Prize for Sculpture of the Japanese Foreign Ministry at the Tokyo New National Arts Center.

Received 2019 the Art Mirai Prize for Sculpture at the New National Arts Center in Tokyo.

The artwork has been exhibited in Japan, Korea, Europe and America.

Writings about the creative process, teaching how an artistic idea becomes an artwork.

Some of these texts have been published.

When people see my wood sculptures, they are reminded of Enku, the famous Buddhist monk-sculptor (1632-1695). Enku called his method "Ichiboku", "One piece of wood".

I work the same way.

After doing art-workshops, since 1997, all over Japan, my Japanese wife Yumiko and I established our art school in Yokosuka, the “Yokosuka Atelier House”.

Here we continue to teach our students painting and sculpting, based on our "Adoration Art" philosophy.

Our sincerest aim is to let people experience a deeper meaning in life through real art, especially through own creative activity.
